About this tool

ULID helps developers, data engineers, and QA teams generate lexicographically sortable identifiers, decode embedded timestamps, validate incoming ULID strings, and create copy-ready batches for fixtures, logs, queues, and API examples.

Use cases

  • Generate a batch of sortable IDs for seed data, examples, or event records without writing a script.
  • Decode the first ten ULID characters into an ISO timestamp when debugging logs or customer-reported identifiers.
  • Validate ULID input before documenting schemas, test cases, import files, or API payloads.
  • Copy newline-delimited ULIDs into spreadsheets, tickets, SQL examples, or JSON fixtures for repeatable test data.

FAQ

What is ULID best used for?

ULID is best used when you need compact, URL-friendly identifiers that sort by creation time while still including random entropy.

What input and output should I expect?

Generate mode accepts an optional batch count. Decode and validate modes accept a 26-character ULID and return validity details plus timestamp fields when possible.

Does a ULID reveal timing information?

Yes. A ULID encodes Unix milliseconds in its first ten characters, so avoid it when creation timing should be hidden.

Are ULIDs secrets?

No. ULIDs are identifiers, not credentials or access tokens, and should not be used by themselves for authorization.
